It was just me and a box of paints. The waves crashed and the sun shone. I made out colourful lines in the rocks and noticed how time had worn pieces away. The lines in the sand and the way the light hit the water set a tone to the soundtrack. It played on as I watched some brave the sea, letting the waves wrap around them like a blanket, though not a very warm blanket. Some played on the sand in groups, some came alone looking out towards the horizon, as if a long lost love was waving back. I stayed till the sun set and brought my sketches and box of paints home. A print taken from an original acrylic on canvas. Dove and the bluebells.Thirty years ago I sat in a house with Mrs Reed who would become my piano teacher. She was an astute, witty, joyous woman who not only played the piano beautifully, but also the cello. Her music room stretched out to a garden that never seemed to end. She kept doves and every so often you could hear their coos. Containing 1–13 rising notes, and a sequence repeated 4–5 times per minute for many minutes on end, they were the soundtrack to her garden. It feels like a million years ago now. In time as I learnt to play, I was allowed to play in the garden after my lesson, climb the trees and look at the doves.I feel really connected to my own garden at the moment, more than I ever have and for a number of reasons. As featured in the April 2024 Country Living Edition, this beautiful bespoke Springtime hoop is decorated with dried blooms, all grown onsite here on the farm. Made from chicken wire and homegrown willow, blooms and seed-heads are free-woven into the wire making a unique decorative hoop.
