A bit of a long post. Bear with. When I was a teenager I went on an adventure, an adventure that would stay with me for the rest of my life...an adventure to Egypt. A family trip. An adventure down the Nile. Being a super nerdy teenager (and as it turns out a super nerdy adult) I was completely immersed in the history of Egypt, particularly on days where trips to Karnak, Luxor, Abu Simbel made me appreciate the sheer scale of construction, artistry, science, feminism & hubu alhayaa (meaning love of life)

The trip was one which will never be forgotten and my dad especially loved learning about Egyptian history, absorbed key information about the valley of the Kings, Elephantine Island and the temple of Edfu, whilst coiffing Arak, the Egyptian equivalent of Sambuca. As I mentioned, I was a super nerdy teenager, keen on learning it all…and I too soaked it all up...the history, not the Arak…bleughhhh….

Today marks six years since we lost dad and its taken me six years to realise he was never lost in the first place!. Because, a lively, colourful, kind, bold history lives on. It doesn’t take away sadness, but it contextualises life....and so....one nerdy evening not so long ago ....I set myself a personal challenge, to gain my diploma in Egyptology. To honour my nerdy self and to consolidate the “stuff in the noggin” that needed to find out more.

I have no shame in telling you, I loved IT ALL and I’ve come out with a Distinction in Egyptology!!! What I’ll do with it? I don’t know yet. Maybe something, maybe nothing. Who knows. I’d love to say it screams Lara Croft....but my family have reminded me I’m more like Dora the Explorer (backpack in tow) and that’s fine by me.

Dad...I miss you...every day....today is just another day.... but this one is for the both of us...You’ll be pleased to know my final essay on the Queens of Egypt consolidated knowledge of feminism in ancient Egypt. Thank you Sobekneferu, Hatshepsut, Cleopatra VII, Meritneith & Ahmose-Nefertari and here’s to you dad, I shall be raising a glass of Arak later x

Well that weekend went quickly! Hope you had a good one. Ours was a mixed bag of haircuts, bringing logs in and fighting the common cold, (so the house now looks like a low budget Vidal Sassoon advert, which is set in a log store and where all the film crew are dosed up on Beechams & wellwoman 😂)

When we listened to the weather report before bed last night (because that’s our vibe) the weather reporter said that today was due to feel ‘Mondayish’. We gave each other a look...”Mondayish?!”. But then I woke up this morning, pulled the blinds and thought, that’s EXACTLY how to describe it. Totally uninspiring, grey and ISH all round. So, wherever you are, however you feel today, here’s some colour for a MondayISH day. I’m off to do some work 🎶🎵”like I’ve just stepped out of the salon” (anyone remember Salon Selctives?! 😂 what a jingle)

Freezing. Yesterday I double socked, double jumpered and still the icy tallons got me 😂 I sat at my desk, at one point with mittens, knowing full well I looked like the body double of Bob Cratchit 😂 Gotta say, despite the cold, I’m so happy it’s the weekend as the week was a mix of sports fixtures, maths homework & being mums taxi. Oh Saturdays, I might just love you….a weekend off celebrating every single piece of knitwear & bringing all the logs home. Here’s to layering knitwear and mittens, mittens don’t get enough press. NEW WORK & the process behind the Hand-painted Spring Bouquet.

It all begins with a sketch and some pencils which work out where I want colour and where the blooms will meet. Then I digitised the image to make a cut out & the design is laser cut from sustainably forested wood. Next a strong tea and lots of hand-painting.

This bouquet includes tulips, anemones, snowdrops and lavender & is now available to order.

It’s taken me years and I’m still working on it, but as a forty something perimenopausal She-Ra (!) I’m beginning to think that not worrying as much is the secret to being more secure in your own skin. I’ve been using January as a creative month for experimenting, playing and finding my own niche. I am marmite and that’s ok. This year is about focusing on my own lane and not worrying. If there’s anyone out there who’s got prior experience of papier mache-ing a She-Ra helmet, let me know 😂 & if you’re too young to know who She-Ra is Google her. Final share of how I decorated the cabin for Christmas using book pages from a book I found on the side of the road in a ‘free to pick up’. Paper folded over itself to create the natural tinsel and rectangular pieces glued over garden twine to make bunting.

I forgot to share this over Christmas…but the id

I forgot to share this over Christmas…but the idea came from finding old battery operated lights that we’d had outside for about five years. They didn’t work anymore, had partially rusted but reminded me of something….

I took my ‘Tarquin’ deer which is from an original drawing/print and had the idea that if reindeer were as sassy as I think they are, they wouldn’t want to pull a sleigh 😂

I didn’t have time to create miniature sandbags because I had 17 people for Christmas 😂 but you get the gist.

Other makes are the paper chains made from leftover wallpaper, lampshades, embroidery hoops glued together with dried flowers and foliage, cotton wool clouds & plenty of ribbon from material scraps. Everyone got a stocking & as you can see in this room the colour choice was red & pink. The clouds I’m reusing for an Easter project.

The other decs like the everlasting mistletoe and nutcrackers were made & painted in the studio.

I really don’t want to take any of it down 😭

I officially returned to work this morning and it

I officially returned to work this morning and it feels like I’ve been away for months! My brain has been clouded by christmas pudding, cheese, roast potatoes and all the trimmings!. So many trimmings, everything feels a little frayed around the edges and 100% stretched a little tighter! We had the loveliest Christmas with the Smith clan, but I’m eager to begin again. No resolutions, just a quiet “putting one foot in front of the other”.

However, that “one foot in front of the other”, was a shock to us all this morning, waking up earlier and feeling the bite of the cold and the treasure hunt that was “where is the missing school jumper?”. I went into hunkering mode early, we lit a fire in the cottage to keep it going all day, ready to return fireside tonight. End goal, a bit of Digging for Britain and The Traitors...perfection.

My winter boots are dusted off and the knitwear game is strong. We begin again with the best of intentions and I for one am thankful to be back to work, with a headful of ideas and fluffy glue-gun clouds overhead.

Well here we are then, a Sunday morning where I’ve awoken and for the first ten minutes thought “what day is it?!”. I don’t know about you, but we’re all out of our usual routine, going to bed late, waking up late, opening the fridge to find the never ending supply of Christmas cheese & then wondering why our dreams involve a car chase with a life sized parsnip & a talking goat called Gary.

I also had the best of intentions on the 1st of January, but realise this is impossible until the routine comes back. I’ll officially be back to work on Wednesday, but print orders have been posted as I’m dashing in & out of the studio like I’m being chased by Pete & Gary 🐐(I didn’t tell you the parsnip was called Pete did I 🧀)

In other news, my Dreaming of the Moor print (pictured) has made its way out to you after the lovely people @countrylivinguk featured it in their Feb edition. Thank you! It still blows my cheese mind that I’m found in my middle of nowhere. Your support genuinely means the world to me. Thank you. Normal service will be resumed shortly. That’ll do pig. I have no idea what day it is, how we keep fishing sprouts out of the fridge and absolutely no clue on the rules of how to play Star Wars Mandalorian Monopoly, but we’re here twixmassing like pros. It’s mostly a never ending circle of hazelnut purple quality streets, Christmas cheese & saying “does anyone want anything from the fridge?!” Theres a daily self regulating walk, a constant stream of washing & an undertone of mild rage at the desperate “leaves stuff on the stairs for people to take said stuff to their rooms” (which doesn’t happen) 😂 How’s it with you?!
